SEE THE LIGHT!
A project to raise funds to purchase new theatre lights.

Project See the Light! has the goal of raising funds to purchase new LED powered theatre lights for Geneva High School, located in Geneva, Illinois, USA. The existing fixtures, part of a 2001 upgrade to the auditorium, are old, outdated, and use incandescent bulbs which are very inefficient.

Modern theatre fixtures use multiple LED's as the light source, replacing the incandescent bulb. The advantages of LED powered lights include:

  1. consuming less power
  2. lasting longer than incandescent bulbs
  3. not requiring gel to provide color
  4. can be set to any color of the rainbow
  5. some models have built-in effects
  6. some, called "moving head lights" can be used to light different parts of the stage or audience during a production

Instead of having static light levels and color for scenes in a production, subtle shifts in color or visual effects can be used to affect the mood or emotional impact. If you've been to any live concert or a major theater production, like at the Paramount Theater in Aurora, Illinois, you've seen these lights in action.

Students will get hands-on experience handling, programming and incorporating the light fixtures into shows. This will challenge them while fostering their creativity and imagination. It will enrich their experience by getting them to think how different lighting effects like subtle color changes or movement can enhance a scene. And it will make for a more engaging experience for the audience.

Having modern theatre fixtures will also allow a broader range of plays to be performed as the fixtures will be available to light it properly. It will also provide unique opportunities to light other events and concerts that use the auditorium.

Students are entering high school having years of theater experience both on stage and behind it. Some have been in television shows and movies. We need to provide them a theatrical environment that allows them to build on those experiences. A student's involvement in theater helps them:

  • improve communication and social skills
  • learn creative problem solving
  • gain confidence speaking in front of large audiences
  • gain self-confidence
  • improve time management skills

In addition they learn skills they can take with them.

  • the safe use of power tools
  • construction techniques
  • stage craft
  • how to paint
All of these benefits happen at a time when they are thinking about careers, continuing their education or the next step after graduation. Theatre can help them become the best version of themselves.

The Geneva Theatre Boosters want to make every student's theatre experience the best it can be. Since registering as a 501c3 non-profit 10 years ago, we have tried to do just that. This year, we provided the funds to purchase a new ETC Ion light control board for the theater. While this new control board will communicate with the existing ETC Sensor system and operate the old lights, to us, it's like giving the students a beautiful new paint brush but no paints. Help us fix this by donating funds so we can buy a beautiful modern set of lights for them to paint with.

The requested amount is the total cost of four distinct sets of theatre lights. The sets are designated as Phases One thru Four and range in price from $20,000 and $39,000. When enough money is raised, the lights for Phase One will be purchased. Phases Two, Three and Four will happen when funds for those sets become available.
